With the vision to provide higher education to students in this far-flung and remote region of the Country bordering Myanmar, Phek College was established on 28th July 1981.
The College is NAAC accredited with B+ Grade in 2024 (Second cycle). The college is also included in Section 2f of the UGC Act of 1956 in the directory of colleges maintained by UGC and under Section 12B of the UGC Act of 1956 under the head “Government Colleges teaching up to Bachelors Degree”.
The college became affiliated with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in 1983 and is presently affiliated with Nagaland University.
Initially, the College offered courses only up to the Pre-University level and Degree courses were introduced only in 1994 with B.A. General Course and Honours courses in Political Science, Education and History. Phek College was taken over by the Government of Nagaland on 1st February 1990. The College was shifted to the new campus on 29th October 2002. The nomenclature of the College was changed from ‘Phek College’ to ‘Phek Government College’ in September 2004. The science stream was introduced at the Higher Secondary level in 2005. The College started offering B. Sc. Honours and B.A. Honours courses in English and Economics from July 2013. Complete detachment of Higher Secondary classes (Arts & Science) from the College was completed in 2015.
