
The Environmental Sciences Department of Phek Government College led by its HOD, Mrs.Vilhoutuonuo Theunuo organized an educational visit for the 1st Semester (BA & BSc) students to Phek District hospital as part of the curriculum on Environmental Waste Management on 22nd August 2025. The aim of this practical exposure is to help students understand the real-world application of waste segregation, treatment and disposal techniques.
The resource person, Dr. Panger Longkumer demonstrated how waste is segregated at the source using color-coded bins — yellow for human tissues and soiled waste, red for contaminated plastics, white for sharps and glassware, and blue for general waste. Students also observed the processes of autoclaving, shredding and incineration used for the treatment and safe disposal of liquid waste and hazardous materials.
Hospital officials highlighted the importance of safety measures, including the use of protective equipment and regular staff training to prevent health hazards. They also emphasized the hospital’s strict compliance with the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016, including meticulous record-keeping of waste generation and disposal.
A total of 80 students were also accompanied by the science faculties, Dr. Neilhousano Nakhro and Ms. Shesalu Lohe of Botany Department.
